Architects Interview (with Ali Dean & Sam Carter).
September 3rd, 2011 by Marina Gonsalves & Tawni Rae.It’s cold, foggy, & windy in San Francisco, but it most likely feels like home for the members of the English band, Architects. The weather probably comes as a welcome reminder of Brighton, especially after the first two days of their tour with fellow UK outfit Bring Me The Horizon. We joined bassist Ali Dino & vocalist Sam Carter in the warmth of the back room of their tour bus to chat about how the tour has started off & an unconventional serving of porridge.
How have the first couple of your U.S. shows been?
Ali: Been all right, haven’t they?
Sam: Yeah. Been good. Been better than last time, which is great. Improvement is what we look for, so we’re really happy with the responses in L.A. & San Diego so far. We’re looking forward to tonight & the rest of the tour. L.A.’s always a pretty hard crowd so who knows what the rest of the tour will be like, but we’re excited. How would you compare the U.S. to other places you’ve performed?
Ali: It’s harder over here, isn’t it? You really gotta tour here a lot to do well. It’s a hard market, but you persevere in it. It doesn’t get easier, but you try.
This is your first time touring here since The Here and Now was released.
Sam: Yeah.
How are the fans reacting to the new songs?
Sam: Pretty good. Yeah, I mean the response has been great. It’s really fun playing the songs live & stuff. We’re playing another new song on the set as well, so it’s all going really well.
What would you say was your biggest inspiration for The Here and Now?
Sam: Just touring really. Just being happy with touring, & wanting to do it as much as possible, & enjoying hanging out with each other.
Ali: Just loving life.
Sam: Yeah. What is your all-time favorite song to play live?
Sam: I like that new song at the moment.
Ali: We’ve only played it twice but— No once, but it’s good.Does it have a title?
Sam: No, not yet. Pretty lazy with that kinda stuff. It’s just called “That New Song” right now.
What has been your favorite show to date?
Sam: I think the KOKO in London on our headline tour was probably the best one.
Ali: That was pretty special. Sonisphere this year was pretty good. It was my first show back. It was a laugh.
Sam: It was good.
Ali: Yeah. What is the weirdest thing a fan has ever done?
Sam: Tattoos are always a bit weird.
Ali: I mean there’s one that always sticks out for me, when a guy in Hungary was sort of offering his girlfriend to Sam. He goes, “This is my girlfriend. What do you think? Do you like her?” That was pretty creepy. I dunno, there’s plenty of weird shit that’s happened. But that’s out there for me. That’s one of them. Someone walking in on Sam using the toilet once in Scotland was nice. Asking for an autograph while…
Sam: Taking a shit. What’s the one food that you miss the most when you’re in the states?
Ali: It was porridge, but we sorted that. ‘Cause we got a microwave & a fridge. So we eat porridge all the time now. But you can’t really get a good cup or anything.
Sam: Can’t get a good cup of tea.
Ali: Which is a bit of a deal-breaker, but we get by.Say your band is stuck on a deserted island. Who would you eat first?
Sam & Ali: (thinking)
Ali: You wanna answer this one?
Sam: Tim.
Ali: Really?Why?
Sam: Dunno.
Ali: Got quite a healthy diet.
Sam: Probably would taste quite good.
Ali: Yeah. With some porridge, & nuts, & berries, & honey.
Sam: (makes mixing motion with hands) Mix it all up.
Ali: Mixing quite well. Yeah, I don’t know. I’ll probably eat Sam. He’s quite a tasty looking guy, I suppose.
Sam: Fair, fair. I wouldn’t eat Dan, there’s no meat on him. I wouldn’t get a lot from him.All right, one last question. Would you rather take the Cinnamon Challenge or the Gallon Challenge?
Ali: I don’t know what either of those are.
The Cinnamon Challenge is when you take a spoonful of cinnamon & you eat that, or you drink a gallon of milk within an hour.
Ali: Probably Cinnamon. I don’t think Cinnamon is that bad.
Sam: Still, I don’t think I’d do either, really.
Ali: You gotta take one. I’ll go with Cinnamon.
Sam: Cinnamon, yeah.
Ali: A gallon of milk is a bit much.Anything else you’d like to add?
Ali: Watch out for the crackheads ‘round here. Seems to be quite a lot of them.
the abuse between me and sam might appear to be quite bad, but it’s really not that bad.
I abuse you just as much as you abuse me, if not more.
do not make me use the no homo gif.
